Colorado State University’s Gregory Allicar Museum of Art (GAMA) recently opened a special exhibition by the Artists Support Ukraine Foundation (ASU) in support of Ukraine’s cultural community. The show is scheduled to be continuously projected onto the walls of GAMA’s Robert W. Hoffert Learning Center until Sept. 4, 2022.
The “Ready-to-Print” exhibition was originally curated by Sølvberget Library and Cultural Center in Stavanger, Norway, with the help of ASU. The center intended to shed light on the impacts the Russian invasion of Ukraine has had on the latter’s artistic and cultural groups, and the collaboration resulted in a simple exhibit design that could be easily reproduced by galleries and museums around the world. Artists and illustrators in the show include Alevtina Kakhidze, Vlada Ralko, Anton Logov, Olexiy Sai, Igor Gusev and Maria Kulikovskaya.
GAMA’s installation of the Artists Support Ukraine Foundation Ready-to-Print Exhibition was coordinated in part by Olga Kozhar, a postdoctoral researcher in CSU’s Department of Agricultural Biology. Kozhar first brought ASU and this unique exhibition to the attention of museum director and chief curator Lynn Boland.
Supporting Ukrainian artists
“The purpose of the Artists Support Ukraine project is to raise awareness about the Russian invasion in Ukraine and gather the world cultural community to support Ukrainian artists and cultural workers in need,” Kozhar said.
“This exhibit tells personal stories by Ukrainian artists about how the war has affected their lives and the lives of their families,” she added. “In these horrific times, it is extremely important not to remain silent and for all of us to unite. Ukraine has rich history and culture and now, like never before, it needs world support. Anyone can help by attending and spreading the word about the exhibit [at GAMA], demanding more timely support for Ukraine from their representatives, as well as donating to Artists Support Ukraine’s emergency funds helping the Ukrainian creative sector.”
About ASU
Artists Support Ukraine Foundation (ASU) was founded by Volodymyr Kadygrob and Kate Taylor to aid artists, curators, art managers, singers, actors and other artistic communities affected by the war. Foundation funds are implemented with the help of Port Agency — a residency program and curated collection of contemporary art by Ukrainian artists and designers — and go directly to women photographers in Ukraine as well as cultural workers both inside and outside the country.
ASU’s initiative is supported by Sculpture by the Sea (Sydney, Australia); Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Wakefield, United Kingdom); Female Photoclub and Bell Collective (Germany); and Sølvberget galleri (Stavanger, Norway).
Visitors can view the Gregory Allicar’s Artists Support Ukraine Foundation Ready-to-Print Exhibition during museum hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Thursdays; and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. The Robert W. Hoffert Learning Center is located inside the museum at the University Center for the Arts, 1400 Remington St. GAMA and all museum exhibitions are always free and open to all.
