PRESENTATIONS

The Global Dollar and an Unequal World

Professor of Economics Dr. Ramaa Vasuvaden does research on the political economy of money and finance and the workings and evolution of international financial systems. In this presentation, she offers a bracing look at the inequities and instabilities in the global economy that are the direct result of the current international primacy of the US dollar.

Political Merit – What’s Morality Got to Do With It?

Associate Professor of Philosophy Dr. Eirik Harris is a social and political philosopher whose research interrogates the ways that the ideas of these early Chinese thinkers can contribute meaningfully to discussions in contemporary political philosophy and ethics.. Here Dr. Harris introduces the concept of “political merit” and then invites the audience to consider two conflicting perspectives from early Chinese philosophers on both the meaning of the term and the implications that these different meanings might have for us today.

Laughing Throughout Hot Spots: Finding Humor and Hope in Theatre

Assistant professor of Theatre Dr. Javier Hurtado is a playwright, director, and performance historian whose work centers queer and Latinx performance. In this presentation, Dr. Hurtado offered glimpses into the nuanced stories that members of the theatre troupe Teatro Alebrijes both bring to their performances and draw on to survive in their own lives.
