Interspecies Journey: A residency with unlikely partners
The Colorado State University Dance and Equine Sciences programs collaborated for a week in the Fall of 2023 to find connections and intersections between dance/arts and work with horses to enhance each other’s practices, learning, and research. These unlikely partners came together to find new ways of listening and discovery across disciplines. Guest artist JoAnna Mendl Shaw and The Equus Projects were invited to work with students and faculty in residence. In the studio and the arena, they explored a common language, physical dialogue, and ways to honor and give voice to humans and equines.
Body/Speak builds an inclusive dance community
Body/Speak is a community concert featuring guests from colleges, universities, and dance companies across the region who join CSU Dance for an evening of diverse dance genres. The aim is to support artists and build networks within the Colorado and Wyoming dance communities. At the end of the showcase, participants are invited to collaboratively create an ‘Instant Dance’ together as an opportunity to truly dance together, in the same piece instead of simply on the same stage!

Dwight Rhoden residency comes at the right time for CSU dancers
While so many performing arts opportunities have been halted due to the global pandemic, the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Colorado State University is thrilled to offer dance majors a virtual residency with Dwight Rhoden, co-founder and co-artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, located in New York City, New York.
CSU Dance instructor Judy Bejarano celebrated as “Legend of Dance”
CSU dance instructor Judy Bejarano has received the 2020 Legends of Dance in Colorado award, which honors individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to dance in the state. She was presented with the award during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 25.
Rams create the barre for at-home dance class
Harvey brought the idea for a cost-effective portable PVC ballet barre to Workman who said it was “a no-brainer” for the University Center for the Arts’ scene shop to produce the kits. “Whenever there is an opportunity to help the education of our students, it is all hands-on deck,” he said, explaining how work study and practicum students rolled up their sleeves to help their fellow students.
Dancing in the Pandemic
Without access to the tools of the trade during COVID-19, CSU Dance students and faculty are coming up with new ways to dance, deliver curriculum, interact with students, and accomplish semester-end assignments.
Education in Motion: Bringing movement to Colorado classrooms
Education in Motion, a summer professional development seminar hosted by CSU Dance, provides preK-12 teachers with the tools to incorporate movement in the classroom.
